The Warehouse, family friends or poor business practices?

So The Warehouse is taking R18 games and DVD’s off of their shelves. I see a few issues here.

A) if they do this they should stop selling gore filled books like Tom Clancy or Stephen King. Or “erotica” like 50 Shades of grey or will they continue to let children buy porn from their shelves?

B) This will only add fuel to the fire of the misguided and naive people that try to blame violent games and movies for breeding violent people. Its such nativity that helps lead to ignoring the real causes of issues and thus breeding violent people.

Trailer Review: Insurgent

The teaser trailer for Insurgent went live today. This as many know is the movie sequel to this years film Divergent the story of Beatrice Prior aka Tris (played by Shailene Woodley) and the distopian world she lives in. The series is based on a series of books popular in the teen craze written by  Veronica Roth. Yet another franchise latched onto by Hollywood to hook in viewers. Think the likes of Twilight and The Hunger Games.

Now the new trailer itself see’s Tris with a new shorter, spunkier hairstyle running and jumping around a crumbling city talking to the visage of her dead mother. Clearly this is a dream about the guilt she feels over partially being at cause for her mothers death. I am glad to say that this looks like it will be early in the film and unlike so many trailers these days shows no signs of spoilers.

The CGI is solid as we have come to expect these days and with a solid direction will play out very well in 3D without all the cheesy items being thrown at the camera that too many saw in the first days. The soundtrack falls short on this one though. Some common used sound effects stand out early on, and the music is very cliche for fantasy action trailers. I would like to hear softer music and see less hard text over action trailers to give them a dreamy almost juxtaposed feel.

With this new installment I do hope to see more over the wall and those who dwell there. What was that fence built to keep out? I dare not read the books as I don’t want the spoilers and I have too many books on my plate. Foremost being Clive Barkers Aberat series.

So for its solid feel, lack of spoilers and crisp visuals I do give this one credit.

Macaulay Culkin dead….Yeah right!

So I had to have a little laugh at this one. I don’t know how it began but some time yesterday the internet went a blaze with the news that the once loved Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin had passed away. Now I absolutely loved him in Party Monster (everyone should see it) and was a little saddened. But not to fear as it was all a hoax and he is on tour with his band. I’d insert a you tube clip of them playing but I’ve not mastered that yet.

Perfectly cooked rice

I thought I would contribute to the health and well being of space community with a couple of posts on cooking to get things cooked well. This first one will be on perfect microwave rice. Later posts will include how to cook and peel a perfect “hard” boiled egg. And then some on fish, seeing as New Zealand has a solid history built on fish. Hell, even our northern island is a giant fish that a god caught.

But first the rice….

So for this I use a simple microwave steamer. Very cheap, about $11 at most stores. Now the rice, the healthiest is brown rice, but I don’t like the texture, so the second most healthy choice and the one I use is basmati. If I am just making myself a snack I will use 1/3 cup of uncooked rice. For a small meal 1/2 cup of uncooked rice, and for a meal for my family one cup of uncooked rice. You should rinse this under cold water until the water runs clear. This makes for a fluffier rice. Lastly you want to add double the water you have of rice, so for 1/3 of a cup uncooked rice, add 2/3 cups of water and so forth. Then you put it in the microwave on high. Eight minutes for 1/3 cup rice, ten minutes for 1/2 cup of rice, and fifteen minutes for one cup of rice. Once it beeps, open the lid, fluff the rice up and replace the lid. Leave it to stand for the same time it was in the microwave to finish cooking.

Before adding to the microwave you can add flavour to the water. A teaspoon of sugar for sweet rice. Garlic, turmeric, or other herbs and spices. Experiment and find your perfect blend.

So to conclude;
1/3 cup uncooked rice – 2/3 cup water – eight minutes in microwave – stand for eight minutes.

1/2 cup uncooked rice – one cup water – ten minutes in microwave – stand for ten minutes.

one cup uncooked rice – two cups water – fifteen minutes in microwave – stand for fifteen minutes.

Enjoy some nice fluffy rice.

The flight that wasn’t

So last weekend I went down south for a wedding. Things went great, smooth ceremony with great weather. But the ride back, not so smooth. We were set to travel with Jetstar. We arrived a good time before final check in, got into the line and waited. Soon came a call over the intercom, but with about 30 Asian tourists and other people in front of us and others and lots of noise in a busy airport, no one could understand the intercom and passed it off as another air line. It turns out it was the final check in call for the flight we were still waiting in line for. So due to getting there on time, waiting in cue, and doing everything a normal person would given their instructions we missed the flight and had to pay again to catch another one the next day. Absolutely crap service from Jetstar leading us to decide to never fly with them again. Air New Zealand will be our future choice.

Bubble Militia

Here is just a random thought that struck me today while I was making my daughter smile blowing bubbles and watching the twirl across the yard. Soon I shall have to launch them from rooftops also.

People can not help but to smile when they see a bubble float by, this is more so when it is a random bubble of unknown origin. They hold a magical quality that leads one to think of the impossible. The Bubble Militia aims to fill the world with the joy of bubbles by releasing them in public places where smiles are needed most all the while trying to go unseen releasing these balls of happiness.

App review – Daddy Long Legs

So I’m addicted to this great little game. It’s called Daddy Long Legs by Set Snail. For both Android and Iphone so no one is left behind.

It is a distance game in the style of QWOP but far simpler controls, but no less difficult. From my understanding of it (some artistic licence from the reviewer here) you play a daddy long legs spider buy the name of Jim. Some evil child has kidnapped your family and torn off four of you legs leaving you bipedal. Your mission is to then learn to walk in this new fashion and rescue your family.

Your score is tracked simply by how far you travel with some hard achievements to get along the way, such as reaching 50 meters three times in a row. My record is 28.57m. A nice reward is as you get further some unknown force throws confetti at you. It is inspiring to get further and see more colour rain down.

Get the game, give it a go and tell me how far you get.

A shame when cops have to die

It almost seems common place to turn on the news and see the death of yet another officer, more so in America, and worse yet when its more than one. Alas Danny Oliver and Michael David Davis Jr were shot in the line of duty by Marcelo Marquez and his female partner. Our thoughts go with the families.

I don’t know what spurred the two to go on a shooting and car jacking spree but its always a shame when there is casualties to peoples foolishness. I’m sure the easy access to guns and drugs over there doesn’t help matters. We have shootings too sure, but with fewer guns on the streets, and even then only the most basic ones, it seems at times America does get the short end of the stick for safety.

Again, peace be with the families in this time of mourning.

Day light savings twisted journey

So I don’t fully understand what is going on with all this political agenda over in the middle east, but due to the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur and other factors it seems Israel is dumping, or at least cutting short day light savings this year. This seems to have caused some issue due to phones having it programmed to self change. If anyone has more detailed info or thoughts on the whole ordeal I’d love to hear them.

Diversity

With the latest Letter from the Chairman ($55 mill, way to go community) for Star Citizen we got to vote on another ship. This is great as more ships means more choice and more flavor in the universe. I found myself stuck on two choices my first being the most popular, the science vessel. But all these ships come in at a minimum of $200 USD, this means few will buy it outside of earning it in the game. So my vote went to the third starter.

I likely won’t get one myself but think of the game upon full release. New players are only going to come in on the minimum. This means two choices with a couple of variants. That will be thousands of the same ships being run into over and over in the central planets. A bit of diversity would be nice, say a choice of six starter ships. A cargo freighter (Aurora), a racer (Mustang), a small length explorer (something with jump engine and mid range scanner), a small salvage/mining vessel (for core planets in its start zone), and a couple others to flesh it out. I think all can agree it would be a much more colorful world!
